BRITISH COMPOSER'S WORKS FEATURED IN USO'S SEASON FINALE

The Ukiah Symphony Orchestra’s last concert of their season, given May 19 and 20 at Mendocino College’s Center Theater, was stellar. Conductor Les Pfutzenreuter, in his 22nd season, has proven to be deft in his choice of works fitting the Symphony’s capabilities as well as the interest of the community served. This concert was amazing in many aspects.

Beginning with the Warlock’s Capriol Suite, a set of six dances composed in 1926, was a beautiful weaving of sounds which the orchestra captured perfectly. The Suite was based on tunes in Thoinot Arbeau's Orchésographie, a manual of Renaissance dances.

Cellist Joel Cohen was the soloist in Elgar’s Cello Concerto in E minor, Op. 85. Mr. Cohen plays as if he and his instrument were one, and the interplay between the solo cello and the orchestra was flawless and precise. Mr. Cohen’s interpretation of this 1919 work earned him an extended standing ovation, and the symphony paired perfectly with the soloist.

Following a moving tribute to veterans with a color guard from Ukiah’s VFW Post 1900, the Masterworks Chorale joined the expanded Symphony for Vaughn Williams’ Dona nobis pacem. There are sobering references to veterans and their military service in this cantata, and Katherine Allan, soprano and Richard Goodman, bass, were the soloists. The phrase Dona nobis pacem ("Give us peace"), in different settings, punctuates the entire piece.
